This is based on the Greek myth of Andromeda, who is being sacrificed because her mother claimed she was more beautiful than the gods. The gods could not appreciate this and she had to sacrifice her daughter by chaining her to a rock so that she could be eaten by a sea monster. Luckily she was rescued by Perseus

I don't know how many people know this, but Andromeda was actually an Ethiopian princess according to the story, and she was also betrothed to Perseus, so he wasn't just rescuing her just because, he was rescuing her because he didn't want to lose his wife-to-be before he'd even gotten to hold her in his arms. <3 *Romantic thoughts.*
